Genitourinary Foreign Bodies – Clinical Case 1

A 5-year-old-girl Jo is brought to the paediatric emergency department (PED) with a 2-day history of lower abdominal pain and dysuria. Mum reports she hasnt quite been herself, shes been drinking more and saying it stings when she pee pees. She has no other symptoms. Mum mentions she had a urinary tract infection (UTI) about two months ago and was prescribed an antibiotic beginning with T. She has no relevant past medical history and is fully vaccinated.

On examination she is a febrile with normal observations. Jo points to a sore bit below her belly button. She has a mildly tender lower abdomen in the hypogastrium. She has no signs of localised peritonism. A urine dip had nitrates and leukocytes on it. You decide to prescribe antibiotics.
