History
As with any patient in pain, you will take a full history of the pain. The PQRST mnemonic may be useful:
Provocative and Palliative factors
Quality of pain
Radiation
Severity and Systemic Symptoms
Timing
In particular, it is important to enquire for symptoms suggesting serious underlying pathology. These are known as red flags.
