Lung Contusion
Lung contusion is denoted by patchy airspace shadowing when blood fills alveoli and small airways. Often it is associated with rib fractures in adults. However, it may be seen alone in children whose ribs are less likely to break but transmit the force to the lung underneath.

Rib fractures are not common in children due to their pliable bones. Significant force is required and non-accidental injury (NAI) should be considered as a possibility.
