An ST trainee joins your department following twelve months spent working in an emergency department (ED) within Australia. He says that he has been taught to ‘FAST scan’ and claims to have carried out more than 100 scans. What three things will this trainee need to demonstrate in order to carry out EMUS in the UK?

You review what he tells you and find that he demonstrates these four things and seems quite good at EMUS. He tells you that he wishes to progress to other scans. Will Level 1 competence enable him to do this?

You find that he does not save his scans but always writes his interpretation in the notes. Is this an acceptable approach? Explain your answer.
