A 34-year-old male presents to your emergency department (ED) in acute pain. Earlier that morning, he has been lying in bed about to get up when he suddenly developed severe colicky pain in the left loin radiating to the left groin.
Urine dipstick is positive for blood (4+) and white cells (3+). Full blood count (FBC) and urea and electrolyte (U&E) blood samples have been requested from triage. You suspect that he has ureteric colic.
