You are asked to review a 74-year-old gentleman by a junior colleague in the ED. He has presented with 2 days of increasing confusion associated with fever, and is now combative and refusing all monitoring and investigation. The family are present, but unable to help. Your colleague is unsure whether, and if so how, to proceed with sedating him.
