Author: Janet Skinner / Editor: Tajek B Hassan / Reviewers: Michael Perry, Amanda King, Emma Everitt / Code: A3 / Published: 07/09/2023

This module deals with the assessment and management of patients with appendicitis. The scope of the session includes initial approach and diagnosis, as well as predicting the likelihood of appendicitis based on clinical and laboratory findings, and surgical management of patients with appendicitis.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Elicit the features on history and examination that suggest a diagnosis of appendicitis in a patient with right iliac fossa pain
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests and imaging in patients with suspected appendicitis
  • Institute appropriate emergency department (ED) management for patients with right iliac fossa pain
  • Describe the on-going surgical management of appendicitis
