A 2-year-old boy is brought to your Emergency Department (ED) overnight at 02:00 with noisy breathing and a barking cough.
On examination, of note, he has stridor at rest but is not distressed, he has a runny snotty nose and both his ear canals and tympanic membranes appear erythematous but are not bulging. No effusions seen.
Observations at triage:
- Heart rate 110 beats per minute
- Respiratory rate 26 breaths per minute
- Oxygen saturations 96% on room air
- Capillary refill time <2 seconds
- Temperature 38 degrees Celsius
