Just a viral infection

A 6-month-old boy seen with mum and dad. He has been coughing and had a runny nose for a couple of days, but was brought in today because he was struggling for breath. Mum thinks he stopped breathing for about 10 seconds, and then she called the ambulance. Today he has been struggling to breastfeed and has had no wet nappy for 9 hours.

He was born at term, with no complications and is up to date with vaccinations. He lives with mum and dad (no siblings). He has no PMH and is not known to be allergic to anything.

Obs: T 38.1, RR 70, Sats 89% on room air, increasing to 92% on 2L supplemental oxygen, HR 150, CRT <2 secs

OE: widespread expiratory wheeze, severe intercostal recession, subcostal recession and tracheal tug.
