Introduction to Artefacts

stone_shadow
Artefacts are common in scanning, and are often the result of assumptions made by the machine (and operator).

Without such assumptions the complexity of potential interactions would have made it impossible to develop ultrasound systems.

It is important to have an understanding of artefacts in order to avoid common errors, specifically seeing pathology that is not there. In fact, it is possible to use artefacts for benefit.

Question: What are artefacts are caused by?

They are caused by:

  • Assumptions
  • Equipment malfunction
  • Improper use of machines
  • Operator errors
In ultrasound imaging, most artefacts arise because of one or more false assumptions that are basic design features of all ultrasound equipment.
