Description:

Lower gastrointestinal bleeding in children is an uncommon presentation to the Emergency Department (ED). Despite this the underlying causes can range from benign/self-limiting conditions, to life threatening emergencies which require rapid intervention. This module will discuss the causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in children. It will consider how the causes can be differentiated by age, when to perform further investigations and basic management plans. It will be followed by 5 MCQ questions to consolidate learning.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn basic anatomy and embryology to form a basis for understanding pathophysiology of lower gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Consider causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding and how these alter with age
  • How to plan investigations for lower gastrointestinal bleeding depending on age and presentation, including when these should be admitted to hospital or followed up as an outpatient.
  • Understand a broad overview of management of lower gastrointestinal bleeding
