A 9-year-old boy with sickle cell disease is brought into the emergency department (ED) unable to raise his right arm and leg. About an hour earlier he had a generalised tonic-clonic convulsion lasting about 5 minutes before self-terminating.
His observations are as follows:
HR – 76 bpm
BP – 90/70mmHg
SpO2 – 97% on air
Temp 37C
Examination is unremarkable apart from a reduced power of 3/6 in the right upper and lower limb.
