A three-day-old male infant is brought to the Emergency Department (ED) by his mother, who reports his right eye has been red, swollen and sticky since this morning. She had hoped it would improve but it appears to be worsening and now involves the left eye as well. Alarmed by the amount of pus coming from her babys eyes, she seeks medical attention at your ED.
The infant is otherwise well and feeding normally. He is apyrexial and his vital signs are within the normal range. He was born via an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, at term, and he has been well until today.
On examination, there is bilateral conjunctival hyperaemia and severe eyelid oedema with mild chemosis in the right eye. Both eyes have copious purulent discharge. His corneas are clear, with no uptake on fluorescein stain.
