On your way into work, whilst waiting at the traffic lights to cross the main road outside your emergency department, you witness a 26-year-old motorcyclist being hit by a speeding car.
The motorcyclist is thrown off his bike and lands approximately 10 meters away from his motorcycle, wearing a helmet and protective motorcycle clothing. He is conscious but confused and anxious when you assess him. His breathing is fast and shallow. He appears pale with cool peripheries and complains of pain in his groin. Of note, he has bruising over his anterior pelvis and an open distal right lower limb fracture.
He is placed onto a scoop by paramedics and quickly brought into your emergency department. You suspect he has sustained major pelvic trauma.
